An Exercise Tolerance Test or Stress Test records the heart’s electrical activity (rate and rhythm) during exercise. It is useful chiefly in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. By placing the stress of exercise on the heart, the test can bring out abnormalities caused by partial blockages in the coronary arteries – abnormalities that are often completely unapparent at rest.

An Exercise Tolerance Test or Stress Test records the heart’s electrical activity (rate and rhythm) during exercise. It is useful chiefly in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. By placing the stress of exercise on the heart, the test can bring out abnormalities caused by partial blockages in the coronary arteries – abnormalities that are often completely unapparent at rest. It evaluate the response of the heart to the physical stress. This is undertaken by having patient walk on a treadmill, by gradually increasing the speed and inclination of the machine, which transfers the reading to relevant devices to monitor the electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure are continuously.

Stress tests can identify when blood vessels have 70% or more blockage. Severe narrowing is causes the acute chest pain also called angina. There occurs various causes in spite of normal results from a stress test. Normal stress test do not rule out the probability of heart attack. The reason that, plaque can still rupture and form clots and block an artery.

An exercise stress test used to determine the level of health condition, especially while performing physical exercises.

Why do an exercise stress test?

An exercise stress test is primarily used to help doctors to decide whether heart receives sufficient amount of oxygen and appropriate and required amount of blood flow when it needs it most, especially on exercising and routine physical activity.
